Appearance Design & Display
Like Nothing Phone (1), Unihertz Luna adopts the design of transparent back shell + LED light strip, but the details are relatively rough. This style of splicing technology is very rare in the design language of modern mobile phones. Although it is a little trivial in the overall aspect, it is highly recognizable and catches people’s attention. Such a design increases risks for manufacturers, and the polarization of consumers is serious. Those who like it like it very much, and those who hate it will not have any possibility of buying it.
Digging into the LED light settings section, I found a brightness slider to dim or brighten the lights, as well as toggles for ringtones, notifications, and music visualizations. You can choose between 7 light modes, or keep the lights on indefinitely — a drain on the battery. However, there is no charging animation. You can directly control the lighting effect on the mobile phone desktop (the part in the red frame).
Apart from the lights, everything about the Unihertz Luna is very similar to the Nothing Phone (1). A glass back, visible circuitry and screws, an iPhone-style design, and rounded corners—all of which look similar but are bigger. Only the camera module is different. The square bump houses three lenses: a 108MP main camera, a 20MP night vision camera, and a 2MP macro lens.
The front of the phone is a 6.81-inch flat screen with Panda MN228 glass on the surface and a resolution of 2340*1080 pixels. The borders on both sides of the screen are very narrow, and the visual perception is quite good, but the phone does not use the screen fingerprint unlocking solution, and only supports the side fingerprint unlocking function. The upper left corner is a hole-digging camera design with a pixel size of 32MP.
On the right side of the smartphone are the volume buttons and power button, on the left side there are two multi-function buttons, and on the top there is a 3.5mm headphone jack and infrared blaster. The default functions of the multi-function button are screenshot (double-tap up), switch LED light strip function (double-tap down) and take pictures (single-tap up or down), which can also be customized.
The smartphone adopts a right-angle frame design, the body size is 168*76.8*10.4mm, and the weight is 298g – it is very heavy and cannot be used with one hand for a long time. There is still a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top of the fuselage, which is very friendly to users who use wired headphones frequently.
Performance & Game Testing
Perhaps too focused on the design, the hardware configuration of the Unihertz Luna is not outstanding, worse than Nothing Phone (1).
Luna is equipped with the MediaTek MT6789 processor (Helio G99), with a maximum CPU frequency of 2.2GHz. The Helio G99 processor was released in May last year, and its performance is slightly weaker than the Snapdragon 780G. The smartphone is equipped with an 8GB + 256GB UFS2.2 combination. GeekBench 6 has a single-core score of 723 and a multi-core score of 1999. The AnTuTu benchmark score is 374765.
In the 30-minute “Genshin Impact” game test, the average frame rate of Unihertz Luna was only 30.08 fps. Although the frame rate fluctuated during the game, being able to run “Genshin Impact” smoothly is already a pass for Luna.
Photography & Battery
In terms of photography, Unihertz Luna has become a little more serious – maybe they also want to develop in photography?
In terms of camera configuration, Unihertz Luna adopts a rear triple-camera solution. The main camera is 108-megapixel, combined with AI image algorithm can also provide a relatively good photo performance. I prefer its infrared shooting mode – after all, the average smartphone rarely has an infrared shooting mode. The other two cameras are the 20MP night vision camera and 2MP macro lens. The front camera is a 32MP selfie camera.
In terms of battery life and charging, Unihertz Luna is equipped with a 5000mAh battery that supports 18W fast charging. The battery capacity is okay, but the fast charging power is too low – after all, the LED light strip consumes a lot of power. It takes about 2 hours to charge the phone from 0% to 100% – the charging efficiency is very slow!
System & IR Remote Control
In terms of system, Unihertz Luna is equipped with the native Android 12 operating system, which satisfies the user group who likes the native system. Unfortunately, Luna does not support 5G network, only 2G/3G/4G.
Luna support IR remote control function, it allows you to use your phone as a remote control for TV and air conditions, making it more convenient and efficient to perform these actions.
