Battery Life and Appearance: Inherit the family’s classic design

Since Sennheiser officially launched the first generation of MOMENTUM True Wireless in 2018, this series of products has maintained its representative and highly recognizable design style – the charging case is made of cloth material, the rounded earbud shape, and the metal laser logo wait.

From a design perspective, very little has changed since the third-generation model. Although Sennheiser says: they have improved the eartip and nozzle design to better protect against earwax. All the big changes are internal.

The battery life has been slightly increased, with up to 7.5 hours of single use and up to 30 hours of total battery life (True Wireless 3 is 7-28 hours).

Comfort and Control: More comfortable and easier to use

The weight of a single earbuds is 6.2g, which is 0.4g more than the previous generation. Although the weight is slightly increased, it does not cause a significant difference in ear pressure. The reason why I am satisfied with the wearing comfort of Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 is that each earbud is equipped with silicone earwing to ensure a secure fit.

The Momentum True Wireless 4 is equipped with 3 sets of earwings in three sizes (S/M/L). Their function is to become the third support point outside the eartips and earbud cavity shell, forming a three-point fixed structure design, which greatly improves the wearing stability.

And for me, this is true in daily use. Wearing MOMENTUM TW 4 while jogging in the park or doing strength training at home, the earbuds are securely worn throughout the entire process and are not easy to loosen or fall off.

Also, MOMENTUM TW 4 earbuds have IP54 dustproof and waterproof protection, which is an improvement over the previous model. It can prevent liquid splashes such as sweat and rain, and has newly added dust-proof performance, which can meet the needs of more sports scenes such as outdoor running and cycling.

The control scheme is the same as the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3. The headphone cavity has a capacitive touch sensing area, which can be used to control music playback/pause, ANC/transparency mode switching, answer call, and adjust volume via single tap/double tap/triple tap/long press. Plus, you can customize the touch control scheme of the earbuds in the Smart Control App.

Calls and Noise Canceling: More smart noise cancelling performance

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 have three microphones installed in each earbud (the number remains the same as the previous generation). Two of the microphones are located on the outside of the earphones, while the other is facing the ear canal, and uses beamforming technology to reduce noise to obtain clearer voice call quality. This is also the mainstream noise cancelling solution currently used on most flagship TWS headphones. At the same time, good results can also be achieved for phone calls and voice calls.

When making voice calls in the subway, the sound from the earphones can still remain clear. In an outdoor windy environment, the headset microphone can correctly identify wind noise. As long as you are not walking against the wind in a windy environment above level 5 or 6, the sound heard by the other party will be relatively clear.

Plus, a wealth of noise cancelling options are also provided in the Smart Control App. The new generation hybrid adaptive noise cancelling technology used on MOMENTUM TW 4 has also been improved, ensuring that you can hear the station voice reminder while shielding external noise.

When playing with music, especially in the subway with complex background sounds, I can still get a comfortable and quiet listening experience. At the same time, the sound performance does not affect the tri-frequency balance and high-frequency delicacy due to turning on ANC.

When you need to hear the surrounding sounds or have a conversation, you can turn on the transparency mode – which can greatly reduce the occlusion effect of the earbuds and instantly present natural and clear ambient sounds. The transparency mode provides three levels of low, medium and high, and users can manually adjust to the most comfortable listening experience.

In addition, the APP also provides a “sound area” automatic adjustment mode (requires your mobile phone positioning permission). When the earbuds follows the user into a certain area, it can trigger preset operations. For example, when I enter the office, the earbuds automatically turn off ANC and turn on transparency mode, and the preset equalizer will also change accordingly. The setting of the map range is also very intuitive, making it easy to get started when using it for the first time.

It is worth mentioning that Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 also support a new generation of broadcast audio – AURACAST. It works just like you usually search for a Wi-Fi network or scan a QR code to easily join, connect your device and receive broadcasts. This new technology promises to change the way we experience audio and connect with the world in the future. For example, connecting to public radio, television broadcasts or assistive hearing (to improve audio accessibility in public places and avoid missing train announcements).

Sound Quality: Blessing of high-resolution audio

The Momentum True Wireless 4 follows Sennheiser’s proud TrueResponse ultra-wideband transducer system, equipped with a 7mm dynamic driver, with a frequency response range of 5Hz-21KHz and a sound pressure of 107dB SPL (1kHz/1mW). The new upgrade also includes aptX Lossless bluetooth audio transmission and 24bit high-resolution audio. In addition, MOMENTUM TW 4 also uses the new generation bluetooth standard LE Audio.

In terms of connection technology, MOMENTUM TW 4 uses the latest Bluetooth 5.4 technology and supports SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX Adaptive/Lossless, and LC3 bluetooth audio codecs.

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 has balanced low, mid and high-frequency performance. The low-frequency has strong impact and rhythm, and the quantity is moderate. The separation between vocals and instruments is well-organized, and the sound layering is clear when listening to pop and classical music.

Overall, MOMENTUM TW 4 has very good control over female vocals, Hip-Hop, and pop rhythms. At the same time, the MOMENTUM TW 4’s performance is also remarkable when it comes to controlling the intensity of jazz drums and bongos.

The equalizer adjustment of MOMENTUM TW 4 has also been optimized, bringing a new adaptive 5-band equalizer. For users who like to calibrate their audio experience through an equalizer, the sound of MOMENTUM TW 4 can be adjusted via the 5-band equalizer. The new equalizer adapts to the loudness of audio content, which has the benefit of ensuring a better sound match regardless of volume.

The “sound personalization” provided in the App further improves the playability of the earbuds. After putting on the headphones, you will hear three sounds of a song (strings, bass, drums), and then you need to adjust the volume balance of different frequency bands and instruments according to your preferences. After several rounds of screening, you will get a sound adjustment style that is more in line with your listening preferences.

Conclusion

From an iterative perspective, Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 is a new intelligent upgrade of the series, incorporating new connection technology, adaptive noise cancelling, smart scene switching, and better high-resolution audio performance. Although the overall appearance design has not changed much, the interior of MOMENTUM TW 4 has brought about obvious upgrades.
