Realme GT Neo3

On March 22, realme officially released the GT Neo 3 150W esports smartphone, which is not only the first product to be equipped with MTK Dimensity 8100, but also incorporates 150W light-speed second charging technology and an independent display chip. After experiencing Dimensity9000, Dimensity 8100 will undoubtedly arouse more people’s desire to buy. Will realme GT Neo3 be the best among Dimensity 8100 models?

realme GT Neo 3 specs and features:

Dimensity 8100 Chip

At the end of last year, MTK released a new generation of flagship SoC Dimensity 9000, promising similar performance to competitors and better energy efficiency ratio, so users are very hopeful of the arrival of Dimensity 9000. However, after the mobile phone equipped with Dimensity 9000 was launched, Dimensity 9000 did not meet user expectations. Its performance is not bad, but unfortunately the energy efficiency is not much different from the Snapdragon 8. In addition, the time to market was more than 2 months late, and it did not achieve the expected success. However, when MTK launched the Dimensity 9000, it took out the Dimensity 8100 in time to compete in the sub-flagship market, which is getting more and more attention.

The Dimensity 8100 is manufactured using TSMC’s 5nm process and has a total of 8 CPU cores. The 4 large cores are 2.85GHz Cortex-A78, the 4 small cores are 2.0GHz Cortex-A55, and the GPU is Arm Mali-G610 MC6, which supports LPDDR5 and UFS3.1. Built-in Imagiq 780 image engine, fifth-generation AI processor APU 580, HyperEngine 5.0 game engine, 5G Modem complies with R16 specifications, and directly benchmarks Qualcomm Snapdragon 888.

There are two versions of realme GT Neo 3, one of which supports 150W light-speed second charging technology and has a battery capacity of 4500mAh. Another version of the battery capacity increased to 5000mAh, charging speed has decreased, all versions are equipped with Dimensity 8100. What we got in this test is the realme GT Neo3 150W. Its CPU frequency runs at the standard frequency, supports GT mode, which will release the full performance of the processor, and is equipped with 12GB LPDDR5 and 256GB UFS3.1. We first tested the Dimensity 8100 performance using AnTuTu. The left picture below is the default setting, and the right picture is the GT mode enabled. The realme GT Neo3 uses GT mode 3.0, which will change the screen refresh rate to 120Hz, enable the intelligent instantaneous 1000Hz touch function, and enable AI and chirality functions.

The total score of realme GT Neo3 in AnTuTu (V.9.3.4) is 823168 under the default setting, and the total score is increased to 824630 when the GT mode is turned on. The performance improvement is mainly due to the CPU score, but the difference between the two scores is not very large.

Judging from the AnTuTu score, the performance of the Dimensity 8100 can compete with the Snapdragon 888, but it is an indisputable fact that the mobile phone SoC generates more and more heat, even the Dimensity 8100 is no exception. Therefore, the realme GT Neo3 is equipped with the diamond ice core cooling system Max. The cooling system Max has a 9-layer heat dissipation structure composed of copper foil, graphite sheet, graphene, VC, diamond gel, copper foil + gel, silicone sheet + copper foil, graphite sheet, and graphene. The total heat dissipation area reaches 39606mm², which is 7.74% higher than the 36761mm² heat dissipation area of the realme GT2 Pro. In order to test the performance of the cooling system, we used AnTuTu for stress testing at a room temperature of about 23°C. During the test, the screen brightness bar is pulled to 1/3. The test results of the default setting and GT mode are shown in the following figure:

Left default setting, right GT mode

From the test results, it can be seen that the strategy of realme GT Neo3 is to control the temperature at a certain value (according to AnTuTu, the battery temperature is around 41℃) to release the Dimensity 8100 performance as much as possible. Under the default settings, the CPU remained firm at the highest frequency for about 20 minutes, and then the CPU frequency began to decrease and lasted until the end of the 45-minute test. In GT mode, the CPU also persisted at the highest frequency for about 20 minutes and then started to reduce the frequency, but in the next test, it will keep trying to hit the highest frequency. However, due to temperature limitations, the frequency will fall back within 2-3 minutes, and this process will be repeated until the end of the test.

In addition to being equipped with Dimensity 8100, the realme GT Neo3 is also equipped with an independent display chip, which can add a frame of motion compensation between game frames (with extreme frame stabilization enabled). Among them, “Genshin Impact” supports frame insertion to 90fps, and “LOL” and “Game For Peace” support frame insertion to 120fps. However, during the test, the firmware version number of the mobile phone is RMX3562_11_A.20, which has not yet been adapted to the 120-frame mode of “Honor of King”, and the firmware needs to be updated on March 24. And the “game frame insertion” function is not set by default and needs to be turned on through the custom menu. There are two modes of improving frame rate and optimizing power consumption in game frame insertion. The former is to ensure the smoothness of the game, and the latter is mainly to reduce power consumption. Next, we test the stability and mobile phone heating of “Genshin Impact” in GT mode + game frame insertion (increasing frame rate), and the test duration is 30 minutes.

The first thing to note is that PerfDoctor cannot recognize the frame rate of the mobile phone after frame insertion. It can only recognize the rendering frame rate, but this does not affect the improvement of the smoothness of the game by interpolating frames. The test results are similar to AnTuTu. Realme GT Neo3 maintains a stable frame rate for the first 20 minutes, but after 20 minutes, the performance of the phone will be affected by high heat, and it is easy to drop frames during battle. After the 30-minute test, we used the FLIR ONE PRO infrared thermometer to test the temperature of the front and back of the phone (room temperature is about 20°C). The highest temperature occurs near the front camera, about 50°C, and the temperature on the back does not exceed 48°C.

150W light-speed second charging technology, fully charged in 15 minutes

In addition to the Dimensity 8100, the 150W light-speed second charging technology is also a highlight of the realme GT Neo3. According to the official introduction of realme, the built-in battery capacity of realme GT Neo3 is equivalent to 4500mAh, and the actual capacity is a typical value of 2*2250mAh. At 150W light-speed second charging, 5 minutes of charging can restore 50%, and it only takes 15 minutes to fully charge. In order to achieve such high-speed charging, realme GT Neo3 uses an exclusive custom flash charging chip and a new 4:2 high-power charging architecture, which converts two channels of 20V 3.75A high-voltage current into two channels of 10V 7.5A low-voltage current, The final confluence is a 10V 15A high current input battery.

The realme GT Neo3 uses a parallel scheme of two charging systems, and each 2250mAh battery can obtain a maximum charging capacity of 10V 7.5A. For fast charging, the phone is equipped with a charger with a maximum output of 20V 8A (160W). At the same time, in order to ensure the safety under high-power charging, the realme GT Neo3 has 38 safety protection measures, applies the anti-backflow circuit design and the rhodium-ruthenium alloy charging port, and has also passed the German Rheinland safe fast charging certification.

However, it must be mentioned that the default setting of realme GT Neo3 is to turn off the 150W light speed second charging function, and the “charging acceleration” function must be manually turned on in the battery settings. According to our “charging test” function using AnTuTu, it took 16.02 minutes to charge the realme GT Neo3 from 2% to 100% at room temperature of 23 degrees Celsius. There is a slight difference from the official data, but the difference is not significant. A friendly reminder, if the realme GT Neo3 charging acceleration function is turned off, the charging speed will be greatly reduced even with the original charger. It takes about 20 minutes to charge from 2% to 50%.

Three-camera configuration, taking pictures depends on the main camera

No phone can escape the fate of talking about the camera, and the positioning of the realme GT Neo3 as a gaming phone is no exception. Its front is a 16MP/F2.05 ultra-wide lens, and the rear three-camera system is an 8MP/F2.4 ultra-wide lens, a 2MP/F2.4 macro lens and a Sony IMX766 main camera.

Front camera and proofs

The IMX766 is a 1/1.56 CMOS sensor with a 2x2OCL structure and a total of 8192×6144 pixels. It has stronger automatic capability and can output high quality “2X zoom” images. At the same time, it is equipped with a lens with OIS optical image stabilization and F1.56 aperture. In order to provide better picture stability, the anti-shake function is enabled by default in video mode.

In the realme GT Neo3 camera interface, three shooting angles of view are provided by default: ultra-wide (0.6X), wide-angle (1X) and telephoto (2X). Among them, the ultra-wide is from the F2.4 ultra-wide lens, the wide-angle and telephoto are both from the IMX766 main camera, and the telephoto is achieved by cropping and re-Bayer. Therefore, we can see the following situation (picture below), in the same scene, the wide-angle and telephoto colors are similar, and the ultra-wide-angle color is slightly greenish, which is not as real as the previous two. By the way, the macro lens needs to be called through super macro, which can fill the problem that the close-up distance is too far after the main camera is outsole.

Macro proofs

In actual performance, IMX766 has the best shooting effect. In addition to the decrease in the edge resolution of the image quality, the noise and resolution performance are good, and the street shooting mode for fast filming is supported.

Main camera proofs

The main camera uses night scene mode to shoot, sometimes causing oil painting effect

If measured from the perspective of flagship mobile phones, the combat effectiveness of realme GT Neo3 is not outstanding, only the main camera has combat effectiveness. But from the perspective of esports smartphone, its combat effectiveness is more prominent. After all, the performance of the main camera of many mobile phones under the banner of esports is not satisfactory.

Comfortable Touch & High Refresh Rate Screen

At the end of the article, I have to mention the shape and feel of the realme GT Neo3. As realme’s first esports smartphone, it is available in three colors: Le Mans, Silverstone, and Cyclonus Black. The one I tested is Hurricane Black, and the back is made of AG glass with a frosted effect, making it difficult to leave fingerprints when using it. Moreover, the back and front of the fuselage are curved, so it can maintain an excellent feel even when the fuselage size reaches 163.3*75.6*8.2mm and weighs 188g.

On the front of the fuselage, is a 6.7-inch OELD screen with a resolution of 2412*1080 (FHD+), 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 wide color gamut, a contrast ratio of 5 million:1, a local peak brightness of 1000nit, and supports 120Hz refresh rate and 360Hz touch sampling rate and intelligent 1000Hz instant touch sampling. In addition, the seventh-generation screen fingerprint technology is applied, which is more suitable for the moment when you need to wear a mask every day to go out.

Conclusion:

If you want an esports smartphone suitable for daily use, then the realme GT Neo 3 is a suitable choice. Although its performance is not as dazzling as the active cooling esports smartphone, it seems that the Dimensity 8100+independent display chip+realme’s conservative power strategy allows the realme GT Neo3 to continuously output performance well. And the IMX766 main camera is much stronger than those cameras that are only suitable for shooting QR codes. The 150W light-speed second charging technology can also help the phone quickly “recover blood”.
