Xiaomi 13 Review: From parameters to experience, from partial to comprehensive

Although the conference was a few days late, the Xiaomi 13 series did not live up to everyone’s expectations. Judging from the feedback on the Internet after the press conference, everyone seems to be very interested in the Xiaomi 13 with a straight screen design. It just so happened that I also received the white version of Xiaomi 13, and then I will experience Xiaomi 13 with you.

Xiaomi Mi 13 specs and features:

  • 6.36″ flexible OLED screen
  • Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor
  • 50MP+10MP+12MP rear camera
  • 32MP selfie camera
  • 4500mAh battery, 67W fast charge
  • $519 – Check latest price on AliExpress (Mi 13), AliExpress (Mi 13 Ultra)

Design and Display

The appearance of Xiaomi 13 can see the shadow of the iPhone, because it uses a high-gloss aluminum alloy right-angle frame. In order to take into account the hand feel, the back of the phone uses 3D curved glass, and the experience when holding it is much better than that of the iPhone, which also uses a right-angle frame design. The front face of Xiaomi 13 is quite attractive, and the full screen with extremely narrow edges on all sides looks very comfortable, and the top/bottom and left/right borders are almost equal in width. The radian of the R angle of the screen is also basically consistent with the frame. I believe that many friends should like this design.

Xiaomi 13 has a 6.36-inch screen, which is considered a small screen compared to many 6.7-inch flagship phones. Coupled with the body thickness of 7.98mm and the body weight of 189g, Xiaomi 13 has a good one-handed experience. And because it is a straight screen design, it is not so easy to accidentally touch it when typing with one hand.

Now that the screen is mentioned, in addition to the straight screen design, the overall quality of the screen of Xiaomi 13 is also very good. The peak brightness is 1900 nits, and the screen display is very clear even in sunlight. For me personally, although this screen is not 2K resolution, the actual experience is still very delicate. More importantly, Xiaomi 13 brings full DC dimming and HDR display.

Full-range DC dimming can effectively reduce eye fatigue caused by screen flicker, while HDR display can better display high dynamic range photos or videos such as HDR. After all, Xiaomi 13 also supports 4K 10bit Dolby Vision HDR video recording. HDR display needs to be manually turned on in the album settings. When displaying HDR photos in actual measurement, it will also show higher brightness and more details in dark parts than ordinary screens. However, when playing Dolby Vision HDR video, the color temperature of the screen will change a lot, and it may need to be optimized later.

Performance and Gaming

The Xiaomi 13 series is equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and the performance of this processor is beyond doubt. The new CPU architecture design and GPU have improved performance and reduced power consumption. In addition to Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Xiaomi 13 also comes standard with 8533Mbps LPDDR 5X memory and UFS 4.0 flash memory with a read speed of up to 3.5GB/s. The memory specifications of LPDDR5X must be familiar to everyone, so how big is the improvement of UFS 4.0? In fact, UFS 4.0 was officially released in August this year. On the basis of retaining 2 channels, it was upgraded to M-PHY 5.0 and UniPro 2.0 specifications. Therefore, the maximum total bandwidth has reached 46.4Gbps, and theoretically it can achieve a transmission speed of up to 4.6GB/s, which is twice the performance of the previous generation UFS 3.0/3.1 standard, and the improvement is still very large.

AnTuTu running score test, Xiaomi 13 easily surpassed 1.3 million points. In the Geekbench 5 test, the single-core score is 1500, and the multi-core score is 5222. The 3DMark Wild Life Extreme test score is 3736, the highest score of the stability test is 3732, the lowest score is 2907, and the stability is 77.9%.

So how does the UFS 4.0 flash memory chip of Xiaomi 13 perform? Through teardown, it can be seen that the flash memory chip of Xiaomi 13 is from KIOXIA, and the model is THGJFJT2T85BAT0. After my actual measurement, the reading and writing speed of this UFS 4.0 flash memory chip is also very fast.

The sequential reading speed of AndroBench test reached 3570MB/s, and the sequential reading speed of AnTuTu test reached 3596MB/s, the speed is firmly at the first-line level. The flagship phones equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 that have been released this year all use UFS 4.0 flash memory as a major selling point. I also look forward to the market where UFS 4.0 will be popularized as soon as possible in the future to further improve the fluency of mobile phones.

In the test of the game, I chose “Genshin Impact” to open the high-effect 60 frame mode. After actual measurement, the average frame rate can reach 60 frames after 30 minutes, and the average power consumption can reach 4.6W. At this time, the maximum temperature of the mobile phone frame is 39.8°C, and the maximum temperature on the back is 36.6°C near the frame. With the support of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Xiaomi 13 can be said to have conquered “Genshin Impact” perfectly.

Leica Imaging

Xiaomi 13 is equipped with IMX800 main camera, 1/1.49 inch, f/1.8 aperture, 50 mega pixel, 23mm equivalent focal length, and supports HyperOIS super optical image stabilization. The telephoto camera is 10 mega pixel, 1/3.75″, f/2.0 aperture, 75mm equivalent focal length, and supports OIS optical image stabilization. The ultra-wide-angle lens is 12 mega pixel, 1/3.06″, f/2.2 aperture, 15mm equivalent focal length.

Of course, the biggest feature of the Xiaomi 13 camera is the blessing of Leica imaging. Including Leica native dual image quality, Leica super color imaging and other technologies. According to my shooting experience, the main camera of Xiaomi 13 has no problem in the performance of the main camera in daytime with sufficient light. In low-light scenes, the main camera of Xiaomi 13 will not blindly increase the brightness, but can take care of the overall look and feel.

It is worth mentioning that the main camera of Xiaomi 13 also has a 2x zoom shortcut button. After the main camera is cropped by 2x, the picture quality is good in the case of sufficient light. But at night, you will feel the decline in picture quality.

In fact, my favorite on Xiaomi 13 is the 75mm telephoto camera. This telephoto lens can provide 3.2x optical zoom, and the picture quality is good enough under sufficient light conditions, which can provide more creative space. Even if zoomed to 5 times, the performance of the picture quality is still sufficient. Of course, this telephoto lens will inevitably have more noise in extremely dark scenes, but it can also bring enough surprises in many cases.

I don’t use many ultra-wide-angle lenses in my daily life, and Xiaomi 13’s ultra-wide-angle lens is generally quite satisfactory. Whether it is day or night, the picture quality in the center of the screen is still acceptable. But the edges of the picture cannot withstand enlargement.

In terms of video, Xiaomi 13’s main camera and 75mm telephoto lens both support 4K 30fps Dolby Vision HDR video recording. It can bring more creative space to friends who like to shoot videos.

Charging and others

Xiaomi 13 has a built-in 4500mAh battery that supports 67W fast charging, 50W wireless charging and 10W wireless reverse charging. The official comes standard with a maximum 67W charger. The actual measurement starts charging from 2%, and it can be charged to 22% in 5 minutes, 35% in 10 minutes, 61% in 20 minutes, 86% in 30 minutes, and it takes 45 minutes to fully charge.

In addition to the performance and imaging that everyone pays more attention to, Xiaomi 13 is also doing well in other aspects. For example, it supports IP68 dustproof and waterproof, which can be applied to more harsh environments for daily use. It also supports WiFi 6 enhanced version, which can achieve faster peak rate and lower power consumption. Support Tesla, BMW, DENZA and other brands of car digital car keys, etc.

In addition, with the blessing of the MIUI 14 OS, Xiaomi 13 really feels like an iPhone to me. It mainly refers to smoothness like an iPhone, and the system animation is smooth and rarely drops frames.

Conclusion: The $790 all-round phone

As a flagship phone with a small screen, Xiaomi 13 looks more like an all-round phone to me. In terms of performance, it is equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. Imaging is supported by Leica, and it is also equipped with a 75mm telephoto lens. The screen is still E6, but with full DC dimming and album HDR display. Although the battery is only 4500mAh, the battery life is good. It’s hard for me to say which one of Xiaomi 13’s performance is outstanding, but it has indeed completed the transformation from favoring a certain parameter to taking into account the overall experience, and this is what more ordinary consumers need.
