Appearance & Battery Life

The Moondrop Alice charging case is a white rounded square box design with a minimalist overall style. The product name is printed under the front opening. On the back is the Type-C charging interface and supports wireless charging. In terms of battery life, earbuds have a single battery life of up to 8 hours, and with a charging box, they can achieve a super long battery life of 48 hours.

The size of the earbud is slightly larger than the general TWS earbuds, because Moondrop Alice uses a complete acoustic cavity structure from Hi-Fi wire earphones. The stacking of components and batteries serves the unit and related acoustic structures, which not only avoids the negative impact of traditional TWS earbuds sensors and FB components on acoustic conduction, but also optimizes the acoustic conduction path.

The pattern formed by the dotted hollows on the outside of the earbuds is the indicator light. The blank area supports touch operation. Users can press and hold the left earbud for two seconds to turn on/off the VDSF+ function (virtual diffuse sound field technology). And it does not support custom setting touch operation.

There are two charging contacts inside the earbud. The sound tube is adapted to the standard in-ear eartips to ensure a proper in-ear depth for better audio performance. The sound outlet is round, and the surface is covered with a metal mesh to prevent foreign matter from entering.

The red circle is the microphone hole, based on the built-in Qualcomm ENC noise cancellation algorithm of QCC5151, it jointly collects environmental noise and voice, and uses the ENC environment noise cancellation function to bring more pure call sound quality. The round holes in the green circle are used to improve the acoustic performance of earbuds.

After actual measurement, the overall weight of Moondrop Alice is about 62.8g, and the weight of a single earbud is about 7.5g. Considering that the acoustic cavity structure inside the earbuds is the same as that of the Moondrop Kato unit, it is considered relatively well controlled. The actual wearing experience will not feel bulky.

Connectivity & APP

Moondrop Alice adopts Bluetooth 5.2 technology, which has good compatibility and stable connection. When connecting for the first time, just select “Moondrop Alice” in your phone’s bluetooth device list to connect quickly. Open the charging case for subsequent use to connect to bluetooth devices such as mobile phones that have been successfully paired. The earbuds can be charged when placed in the charging case, and the connection is automatically disconnected when the cover is closed.

At the same time, Moondrop Alice supports Qualcomm aptX Adaptive transmission protocol, which can switch between high bit rate and low delay mode. Support up to 24Bit/96kHz audio source, which greatly reduces the loss of sound quality caused by bluetooth transmission.

Moondrop Alice is adapted to the MOONDROP Link APP, and you can add devices after downloading and installing. The interface of the APP is also extremely simple, with the products displayed on the top of the homepage and the functional area in the middle. Including firmware OTA upgrade, tuning configuration, custom tuning and product manual.

Tuning configuration is a highlight of Moondrop Alice, which contains up to 10 classic tunings. Except for the default tuning, others are fitted and tuned according to well-known classic headphones models. Users can experience the unique charm of multiple legendary HiFi headphones on the same pair of earbuds at any time. Most configurations can be guessed from the name and description, as follows:

  • Moondrop Target: Tuning based on VSDF Target Response combined with subjective tuning by professional engineers.
  • Austria: A tribute to the legendary open-back headphones of the Austrian headphone brand, which should be the AKG K1000.
  • Brooklyn: A tribute to the flagship dynamic headset of an American headset brand that insists on hand-made, it should be GRADOLABS GS3000E.
  • Hokkaido: A tribute to the legendary Hiend electrostatic headphones that the classic Japanese headphone brand once went bankrupt due to the development of this model, it should be STAX OMEGA.
  • In-Ear Target: The tuning based on the research results of the former AES chairman should be Harman 2019.
  • Munich: Pay tribute to the new flagship dynamic headphones made by the German brand that invented dynamic headphones, which should be the Beyerdynamic T1 MK3.
  • Tokyo: Pay tribute to the legendary closed dynamic headphones produced by the dynamic Japanese manufacturer using the bio-diaphragm, which should be SONY R10.
  • Vienna: A tribute to the German brand of electrostatic headphones that once made people cry, it should be Sennheiser HE90.
  • Wennebostel: I pay tribute to a current flagship dynamic headphones of a German brand with a 56mm ring diaphragm dynamic, Sennheiser HD800S.
  • Berlin: A tribute to the German brand that invented dynamic headphones, a hot-selling open dynamic headphones with good cost performance, it should be Beyerdynamic DT900 Prox.

If none of these 10 tunings can satisfy you, try its professional parametric equalizer. It allows users to adjust the gain and Q value of 5 frequency bands, the default ones are 100Hz, 230Hz, 1.7kHz, 3.75kHz, 8.2kHz. These frequency bands are more intuitive to adjust for general users, and it is easier to get the desired effect.

In addition to 10 equalizers that can be customized for tuning, Moondrop Alice also has a VDSF+ (Virtual Diffuse Sound Field Technology) function, which can be turned on by pressing and holding the left earbud for two seconds. The official explanation for this function is that it can simulate the difference in the direct sound composition at the end of the transmission path between the earphone and the speaker, and further improve the performance of the sound field.

Under the default tuning, it can be clearly perceived that the structure of the entire sound has undergone certain changes. For example, the low-frequency position will float up, the human voice will be more prominent, and the horizontal sound field will increase. This is actually close to the sound effect of Moondrop Target, but VDSF+ will not reduce the sound pressure, and the effect is more radical. It’s fine for some pure vocal pop songs, but can get a little weird with more complex music. In addition, this function can be used together with the previous 10 tunings and custom equalizer at the same time.

Sound Quality of Moondrop Alice

In the hardware part, Moondrop Alice uses the same U.L.T super-linear dynamic unit as Moondrop KATO. This flagship unit with patented technology has received numerous praises on Moondrop KATO, and Moondrop this time fully retains its electro-acoustic transducer structure and acoustic performance, and cooperates with a newly designed high-performance DLC composite The diaphragm is equivalent to giving Moondrop Alice an extremely powerful heart.

In the software part, Moondrop Alice uses VDSF Target Response based on international standards as the target reference for headphone frequency response, and uses a new generation of VDSF+ sound field expansion algorithm to improve the sound field performance. Combined, it’s no surprise that the Moondrop Alice has a level of sound quality that far exceeds that of other true wireless earphones.

Under the default tuning, Moondrop Alice gave me the first impression that the overall style is balanced, the sound is natural and durable, and the details are rich and orderly. At the same time, it has good applicability, and it has a relatively good performance when listening to various styles of music.

The low frequency of Moondrop Alice is still the light taste we are familiar with, and it does not focus on quantity sense. It’s the feeling that after the blow, it will rebound quickly and spread out. Thanks to this relatively strong sense of diffusion, the overall atmosphere is in place and crisp. Instruments such as drum kits can respond quickly and without delay when they are struck. But if you want that extreme extension, impact and heaviness, Moondrop Alice is not good at it. To a certain extent, this “refreshing” low frequency makes Moondrop Alice have the most basic adaptability in various music types.

The mid-frequency of Moondrop Alice is the frequency band that is allocated the most density. The position is moderately close to the listener, the imaging is natural and full, cohesive, and the mouth shape is clear. It is almost without sibilance and irritation, and is of moderate thickness. Therefore, whether it is a male voice or a female voice, it is calm and smooth, but this smoothness actually erases some details, and it sounds a little lazy inside, not particularly tight and tough.

In terms of high frequencies, there are actually no bright spots or particularly attractive features. Because its lines are controlled very conservatively, there is no sense of stimulation in the sound. But at the same time, this also allows Moondrop Alice to maintain a coherent fluency in the mid-high frequencies, with a freely stretchable transparency. High frequency detail and extension are moderate. Even when listening to some songs that were recorded rougher, Moondrop Alice can still make the songs more smooth and easy to accept.
