At the end of 2021, Sennheiser launched its latest mid-range TWS earbuds – Sennheiser CX Plus. This time, while retaining the consistent sound quality of the Sennheiser family, earbuds supports the switching of ANC/transparency mode and adopts Qualcomm’s new generation of audio codecs. High-definition lossless audio files up to 96kHz/24bit can be played on phones that support Snapdragon Sound™ technology.

    Appearance Design

    Sennheiser CX Plus

The Sennheiser CX Plus charging case looks similar to Sennheiser’s previous true wireless headset charging case. The overall texture is frosted, and the rounded square box is used to design the overall volume is smaller, and there is a groove between the upper cover and the bottom case, which is convenient for users to open and close. Below the groove is an indicator light that indicates the working status of the device. The Type-C interface for charging is designed on the back of the charging case.

    Sennheiser CX Plus

The overall appearance of Sennheiser CX Plus earbuds still continues the classic appearance of the brand TWS earbuds. The CX Plus Ture Wireless uses a bean-shaped in-ear design that looks like a small Sennheiser MOMENTUM. There is a larger sound chamber on the back of the earbud, which is used to create the air feel of music.

    Sennheiser CX Plus

The brand’s logo is printed on the back of the earbuds, and there is a pickup hole below the logo for picking up external noise and cooperating with the speaker to realize the active noise cancelling function. The 3 main microphones on the side of the earbud are designed to better pick up sound for voice calls.

    Sennheiser CX Plus

The L/R logo is printed on the inside of the earbud, which is convenient for users to distinguish the left and right ears. There are 4 metal points on the left side, the big one is the metal sheet used to adsorb the earbud, and the small one is the charging sheet used to contact the charging contacts. The black part is the sensor of the earbud, which is used to realize the wearing monitoring function of the earbud. There is a fine metal dust filter at the main sound mouth of the earphone to prevent foreign objects from entering the earbud sound cavity.

After actual measurement, the weight of a single earbud is 6.0g, which is heavier than other earbuds. Therefore, the next wearing comfort needs to test the designer’s level of ergonomic design.

Sennheiser CX Plus Ture Wireless packing list: earbuds*1 pair, charging case*1, XS/S/M/L eartips*1 pair, USB A to Type-C charging cable*1, instruction manual*1, safety Guide*1.

    Comfort Fit & Battery Life

    Sennheiser CX Plus

Although the sound chamber of the Sennheiser CX Plus is larger, the weight also reaches 6g. The overall size is larger than ordinary in-ear earphones. But when actually wearing it, earbuds fit the human ear better, unlike the Sennheiser MOMENTUM, which feels like it will fall off at any time.

In terms of battery life, the Sennheiser CX Plus has a single battery life of up to 8 hours, and the charging case can charge the earbuds fully 2 times for a total battery life of 24 hours. In addition, the earbuds also supports the fast charging function of charging for 10 minutes and listening to songs for 1 hour.

    Sennheiser CX Plus

Wired charging test for Sennheiser CX Plus using a portable power tester. The charging voltage is about 5.16V, the charging current is about 0.36A, and the charging power is about 1.84W.

Sennheiser Smart Contral APP & Controls

Sennheiser CX Plus supports downloading the Sennheiser Smart Contral APP on your mobile phone for earbuds touch, EQ sound effects, and switching noise cancelling/transparency mode. Among them, in the EQ adjustment, we can also turn on two special built-in sound modes such as bass boost or podcast.

The podcast sound effects are specially developed for users who like to listen to podcasts. After this function is turned on, earbuds will enhance the clarity of vocals, but cannot perform self-adjustment of EQ.

In terms of touch, tap the left earbud is in listening mode, and triple tap is in noise cancelling mode. Tap the right earbud to switch to the previous song, and double tap to switch to the next song. In order to facilitate the user to identify the number of times the touchpad is tapped, the earbuds also added a tap sound, and the sound of “Do Re Mi Fa” is issued in sequence according to the number of taps.

    Acoustic Configuration & Sound Quality

In terms of sound quality, Sennheiser CX Plus uses a self-developed 7mm TrueResponse transducer, which can bring a low frequency extending to 5Hz, a natural midrange and a clear high frequency listening experience. Earbuds use Bluetooth 5.2 chip and support SBC, AAC, aptX T, aptx M adaptive audio coding.

    Sennheiser CX Plus

This audition test enables earbuds to support the transmission of 24bit/96KHz audio files because of the introduction of Snapdragon Sound™ technology. I purposely used the Black Shark 5 Pro smartphone that supports Snapdragon Sound™ technology for the earbuds listening review.

First of all, let’s talk about the overall performance of earbuds. The Sennheiser CX Plus is a warm-sounding earbuds that tend towards pan-pop music. Earbuds are supported by TrueResponse transducers, and the listening performance of Sennheiser CX Plus is more tension and expressive than earbuds at the same price. The larger sound chamber design on the back of the earbuds makes the earbuds have a good sense of air when listening to songs, which allows us to feel the air resonate when the drumsticks hit the drumhead, which in turn makes the air vibrate with the drumhead.

The overall sound of the Sennheiser CX Plus is darker, so although the sound quality of earbuds is much better than other earbuds of the same price, the high frequency part is not transparent enough. However, this can be improved by adjusting the EQ.

In terms of mid-range frequencies, the Sennheiser CX Plus handles vocals well, with clear vocal images and precise mouth shapes.
