01/ SONY WF-1000XM5 Charging Case Teardown

Disassemble the charging case shell and take out the charging bin structure.

The charging bin is structured on one side, with the mainboard in the middle, and the battery and wireless charging receiving coil fixed through a frame below.

The wireless charging receiving coil bracket and frame are fixed with buckles. Unlock the buckle and remove the bracket.

Take out the battery unit, fix the lower frame with screws, and stick sponge rubber pads on the battery to fix and cushion it.

Remove the screws and remove the battery frame.

Remove the motherboard and use the magnets on the bottom to hold the earbuds in place.

The ADI MAX77857 is a high-efficiency, high-performance buck/boost converter for systems requiring a wide input voltage range (2.5V to 16V). It has a switching current of 7A and can provide up to 6A output current in buck mode and up to 4A in boost mode (boost ratio ≤ 1.3). It operates in PWM mode and implements automatic SKIP mode to improve light load efficiency.

TI BQ25618 charging IC integrates switching charging, synchronous boost converter and voltage protection functions. Supports 22V withstand voltage and can reduce battery leakage to 6uA in transport mode for charging lithium battery and earbuds.

Renesas IDT P9222 is an integrated single-chip wireless power receiver IC that provides up to 5W charging power. It has high efficiency at light load and is very suitable for TWS charging case charging. The P9222’s unique Ping Detection feature provides users with an early indication of wireless charger connection and improves thermal performance at the end of a full battery charge. A low undervoltage lockout (UVLO) threshold allows the receiver to start up even if the digital ping strength signal from the transmitter over the extended area is weak.

The IDT P9222 includes overtemperature and undervoltage/overvoltage protection. An internal overvoltage clamp prevents the rectifier output from rising above the overvoltage level when the receiver rapidly moves from a low-coupling position to a high-coupling position. The integrated 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0 processor provides a high level of programmability and design parameters that can be easily configured via an I2C interface or external EEPROM.

NXP K32 L2B series microcontrollers, with built-in ARM Cortex-M0 core, are used to implement charging case control functions such as charge and discharge module management, battery power management, indicator light control, and headset communication.

The hall element of the silk screen XBK is used to sense the magnetic field changes when the charging case cover is opened/closed, and then notify the charging case MCU to control the earbuds to pair or disconnect from the connected device.

02/ SONY WF-1000XM5 Earbuds Teardown

The internal structure of the front cavity, all components are connected to the same FPC.

Remove the frame from inside the back cavity.

The pressure relief hole on the inner cavity wall of the rear cavity is protected by a waterproof and breathable membrane.

The newly upgraded new generation V2 integrated processor + QN2e HD noise cancellation processor, silk screen model “GSBR-0002 V5”, adopts SiP (System in Package) system-level packaging, further reducing the size and weight of the product. The chip is equipped with an external metal shielding layer to improve the anti-interference ability of the earbuds and reduce noise. The two processors work together to better control the 6-microphone system and bring better noise cancellation effects. At the same time, it has more professional sound signal processing capabilities, high-quality amplifiers, and a newly developed and designed 8.4mm driver unit, bringing purer and low-distortion sound quality.

03/ Summary

In terms of appearance, SONY WF-1000XM5 continues the family’s uniquely recognizable design language, but has been further optimized compared to the previous model. The charging case is more rounded, smaller in size, and more portable for outdoor. The bean-shaped in-ear earbuds design is more in line with mainstream aesthetics, greatly reducing the size and weight, making it lighter to wear.

The charging case has a built-in 500mAh high-voltage lithium-ion battery and supports wired and wireless charging.
