Hardware Configuration

At CES 2022 in January, AMD announced the Ryzen 6000H series and Ryzen 6000U series of mobile processors. Both use the Zen 3+ architecture with better energy efficiency ratio, integrate the GPU of the RDNA 2 architecture, and upgrade the manufacturing process from TSMC 7nm to 6nm. The IO aspect is greatly improved. The memory supports a new generation of DDR5-4800MHz and LPDDR5-6400MHz, and provides multiple PCIe 4.0. Among them, 8X is allocated to discrete graphics, 4X is allocated to NVMe SSD, 4X is allocated to NVMe/SATA SSD, and 4X is used for other expansions. HDMI has been upgraded to the 2.1 standard. Among them, the eight models of the Ryzen 6000H series are HS 35W, H 45W, and HX 45W+ three versions.

The Redmi G Pro Ryzen Edition is powered by AMD R7 6800H, with 8 cores and 16 threads, the default TDP is 45W, the base frequency is 3.2GHz, and the maximum can reach 4.7GHz. The built-in AMD Radeon 680M integrated graphics card has 12 cores and a frequency of 2200MHz. It can switch to use the integrated graphics card when there is no heavy load requirement of the graphics card, which significantly improves the battery life of the notebook. The version I tested was equipped with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card (default 900Mhz, Boost 1425Mhz, 6GB GDDR6 VRAM, 1750MHz) that supports single-display direct connection.

In other respects, the Redmi G Pro Ryzen Edition is equipped with 16GB DDR5 4800MHz memory and 512GB PCIe 4.0 SSD. The capacity is not large, but a second M.2 interface is reserved for users to expand storage space.

Display & Battery Power

The screen of the Xiaomi Redmi G Pro is also a highlight. In order to take care of a more extreme gaming experience, the notebook is equipped with a 16-inch 2560*1600 resolution screen. It has 10bit color depth, 500 nits brightness, covers 100% sRGB color gamut, and has passed VESA HDR 400 certification. Of course, as a game laptop, the high refresh rate of the screen is not lacking. The 240Hz high refresh rate and AMD FreeSync adaptive refresh technology will definitely add a lot to playing FPS games.

For the screen, I also used the Spyder 5 Elite to test the color gamut and color accuracy. The measured screen can cover 99% of the sRGB color gamut and 73% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, basically in line with the official nominal. The average Delta E of the color standard is 0.67, which is even better than the official data. It is worth mentioning that this screen supports DC dimming, which is more friendly to users who are sensitive to screen flicker.

The Redmi G Pro Ryzen Edition has a built-in 80Wh lithium battery that supports USB PD charging with a maximum power of 100W. However, the current USB PD is unable to meet the game laptop performance release mode. Therefore, the standard configuration is a 330W high-power power adapter, and the power supply + power cable alone reaches 1.16 KG.

Interface & Cooling System

In terms of interfaces, Redmi G Pro provides full-featured USB Type-C (supports 100W charging), Mini DP1.4, HDMI 2.1, 4 USB Type-A, 3.5mm headphone jack, 2.5G RJ-45 network port, SD reader card and power interface. The number of interfaces is high, but the distribution and types are not ideal. The left side of the laptop is a USB Type-A+3.5mm headphone jack. On the right is the USB Type-A+SD card reader, and the other interfaces are all on the back of the laptop. The USB Type-A on the left is the only USB 2.0 interface, which is quite different from the other three USB 3.2 Gen 2 in speed, and there is only one USB Type-C.

The cooling system is very important for a game laptop. Redmi G Pro uses 10mm*1+8mm*2+5mm*1 four heat pipes for heat dissipation, and there are 4 air outlets on both sides and back of the fuselage. The configuration is more luxurious than the Intel Edition, which can achieve better performance release.

On the C side of the laptop, the keyboard has also been redesigned with a numeric keypad. The keys are designed with scissor feet, the key travel is 1.5mm, the keys have a white backlight, and the brightness is adjustable in three levels. Whether it is the viewing angle effect, or the practicality in the dark night is good.

Performance Testing

As a game laptop, the configuration of Redmi G Pro Ryzen Edition is important, but its actual performance in different performance release modes is the key to determining the gaming experience. In order to facilitate users to set laptop performance, Xiaomi G Command Center software is provided. A new crazy mode has been added, and the direct connection function of the independent display can be turned on. The following tests are based on crazy mode + graphics card direct connection (except battery life).

At the beginning of the test, we first look at the CPU and memory parameters. The base frequency of the AMD Ryzen R7 6800H processor on the Redmi G Pro is 3.2GHz, which is no different from the official default specification. It is equipped with 16GB DDR5-4800 memory, 4 channels are turned on, and the CL value is 40.

According to the AlDA64 Cache Memory Benchmark test, the memory read speed is 47244MB/s, the write speed is 53711MB/s, the copy speed is 43784 MB/s, and the latency is 98.7ns. The corresponding speeds of CPU L1 cache are 2161.2GB/s, 1093.2GB/s, 2167.1GB/s, 0.9ns, and the corresponding speeds of L2 cache are 927.63GB/s, 710.44GB/s, 845.61GB/s, 3.5ns.

In terms of hard disk performance, the PCIe 4.0 SSD of the Redmi G Pro is average. The peak read speed is 3433.73MB/s, and the peak write speed is 3148.98MB/s, without breaking through 4GB/s.

Next is the stability test, using AIDA64 Extreme to monitor the power consumption value of the notebook and conduct the stability test at the same time. In the CPU single stability test, the AMD Ryzen7 6800H can instantly hit 84W, the stable value is around 70W, and the CPU temperature is between 90-95°C.

In the bi-item stability test, the AMD R7 6800H can sprint to 80W+ in less than a minute, while the GPU reaches 130W. The peak power of the two can reach 210W, which is very amazing. However, the CPU’s high-power maintenance time is very short, and it will drop back to about 45W in less than a minute, giving more cooling capacity to the GPU. The total power of the two is about 175W, which is 5W higher than the official nominal performance.

Next is CINEBENCH R23, a derivative of Cinema 4D that tests the performance of the CPU in rendering. The AMD R7 6800H scored 12977 pts in multi-core and 1484 pts in single-core.

In 3DMark, I tested Time Spy and CPU Profile. The previous scene reflects the combined performance of CPU and GPU. The graphics card score is 8518, the CPU score is 10074, and it is expected to achieve 85+fps performance under the Battlefield V 1440p Ultra setting. It should be noted that the AMD R7 6800H frequency was reduced in the second half of the test and remained at around 4GHz. Obviously, the Redmi G Pro Ryzen Edition gives more performance release value to the GPU in scenarios that require GPU power.

The CPU Profile mainly tests CPU performance, with a single thread score of 909 and a maximum thread score of 7038. The frequency was basically maintained at the maximum frequency of 4.7GHz throughout the test.

PCMark 10 has a total score of 6885, of which common basic functions: 9817, productivity: 9159, and digital content creation: 9851. The AMD R7 6800H clocked basically above the benchmark throughout the test.

Game Test & Battery Life

In terms of games, I tested the performance with both settings on and off the single-display direct connection. The AMD R7 6800H has a built-in Radeon 680M integrated graphics card. Since the CPU and GPU are interconnected at the chip level, the power consumption will be lower. In addition, the scale of the integrated GPU is small, so in general, the integrated GPU is used for screen rendering and output to the screen to reduce power consumption and improve battery life. However, when using the discrete graphics card to render the game screen, the integrated GPU output is still used, which not only increases the power consumption (two GPUs are used at the same time), but also wastes the PCIE channel on the game laptop, which affects the performance. Therefore, it is particularly important to use a discrete graphics card to render the game and output the picture to the screen.

Under the same settings, turn on/off the “Cyberpunk 2077” test under the single-display direct connection. Under the same settings, the average frame rate of direct connection to the graphics card is 44.45FPS, and it will be reduced to 42.75FPS when it is turned off, which is about 2FPS difference.

During the AIDA64 bi-item stability test on the laptop, I used the instrument to record the laptop surface temperature and noise value. The highest temperature of the C surface appears at the air outlet, which is 48.0 ℃, the maximum temperature of the keyboard is only 37.3 ℃, and the temperature control of the keyboard area is very good. At this time, the noise value is slightly higher, reaching 57.1 dBA, and there will be a very obvious fan sound, which is also normal under the extreme bi-item stability test.

Finally, let’s take a look at the battery life of the Redmi G Pro Ryzen Edition. I set the screen to 50% and tested the performance of PCmark 10 in game and video scenes. The battery life in the game scene is 1 hour and 56 minutes (the power drops from 100% to 0%), but about 1 hour after the test starts, the frame rate will drop significantly. Therefore, the actual battery life under the game should be a little more than 1 hour.

In the video scene (the power drops from 100% to 0%), the direct connection function of the graphics card is turned off. The battery life of the Redmi G Pro Ryzen Edition reaches 8 hours and 8 minutes, which is relatively good for a game laptop.
