OnePlus Ace 2 review: The full popularity of the flagship experience

Since last year, the Ace series products of the OPPO camp have been handed over to OnePlus. The Ace series began to be researched and developed in terms of performance and charging, so the two products of OnePlus Ace and OnePlus Ace Pro (Oneplus 10T) have achieved good results. Recently they launched OnePlus Ace 2, what are the upgrades and highlights of this new phone compared to the previous generation?

OnePlus Ace 2 specs and features:

  • Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor
  • 5000mAh battery+100W charge
  • 6.74-inch 3D AMOLED screen
  • 2772×1240, 120Hz refresh rate

Design and Display

In terms of design, the OnePlus Ace 2 adopts the same “black hole-inspired aesthetics” design as the OnePlus 11. The front of the fuselage is a 1.5K resolution consonance touch screen. In addition to the basic display effects such as the conventional 120Hz screen refresh rate, 1450nit local peak brightness, and high-frequency PWM dimming. This screen also incorporates the exclusive self-developed Lingxi touch technology, which brings industry-leading touch latency to OnePlus Ace 2.

The front of the phone is a 6.74-inch OLED flexible curved screen with a hole in the middle, with a resolution of 2772*1240 and supports 120Hz refresh rate. Although the screen does not provide 2K resolution, it still has a slight advantage in terms of power consumption compared to 2K OLED screens. And the screen also supports high-frequency PWM dimming. Users who are sensitive to strobe in dark light environment can turn on this function to improve the eye protection effect. However, it should be noted that OnePlus puts the high-frequency PWM dimming function in the developer options, and obviously they do not encourage users to enable this option.

Although the phone still supports screen fingerprint unlocking, the fingerprint unlocking position of OnePlus Ace 2 is somewhat biased towards the bottom of the phone. It looks like a short-focus fingerprint unlocking solution, and it takes a certain amount of time to fully adapt to it.

The imaging module is equipped with a main camera, a ultra-wide-angle camera, a macro camera and a flash. On the Outside of the imaging module, the part connected to the side frame of the fuselage, OnePlus Ace 2 is made of curved stainless steel, which is still very rare in this price range.

On the right side of OnePlus Ace 2, the first thing that caught our attention is the classic three-stage button of OnePlus, which is also the first time OnePlus adopts this design in the Ace series. Below the three-stage button is the power button, and the volume button is placed on the left side of the fuselage. At the bottom of the fuselage, the SIM card slot, Type-C interface and speaker are respectively arranged. On the top of the OnePlus Ace 2 are the auxiliary MIC hole, the infrared sensor and the speaker.

The middle frame of OnePlus Ace 2 is made of plastic material, but thanks to the addition of curved stainless steel on the side of the imaging module and the overall body design, the plastic middle frame on OnePlus Ace 2 presents a texture close to metal and high-end feel.

In terms of feel, the body design with front and rear hyperboloids, the weight of 204g, and the back of the body made of exclusive silk glass technology bring a texture and feel that are difficult to see in products with the same price to OnePlus Ace 2.

Performance, Gaming and Cooling

Performance is an important upgrade point of OnePlus Ace 2. Previously, due to the unsatisfactory power consumption performance of Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, OnePlus Ace was equipped with MediaTek Dimensity 8100 processor. However, after the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 was switched to TSMC, the power consumption has been greatly improved, so the OnePlus Ace 2 is equipped with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. And the official said that this is the high-performance version of Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. The AnTuTu running score is 1116292, the single-core score of GeekBench 5 is 1038, and the multi-core score is 3737. However, in the 20 rounds of Wild Life Test of 3D Mark, the stability performance is average, and the stability only reaches 67.4%, which makes people worry about the power consumption performance of this phone.

It is worth mentioning that OnePlus Ace 2 canceled the 8GB RAM version and started with 12GB RAM. Larger RAM capacity can indeed improve the lasting fluency of the phone. Next, let’s focus on the specific performance of the mobile game, so as to verify whether the configuration of this mobile phone can run “Genshin Impact” and “Honor of King” smoothly. Especially at the press conference of OnePlus Ace 2, OnePlus stated that they set up an optimized experience laboratory for “Genshin Impact”. It has been optimized in four aspects: running map, battle mode, game loading and transmission speed loading. From these four links, we also look at whether the loading speed of the game is fast, and whether the frame rate of the game can maintain a state close to full frame.

In an environment where the room temperature is 25°C, the picture quality and special effects are fully turned on, and the mobile phone is in e-sports mode, in the 30-minute running map test of “Genshin Impact”, the average frame rate is 60.48 frames – there was no jank during the whole battle. The time for the mobile phone to enter the game for the first time was 32.07s, and the time for the map to be transferred to the main city was 3.76s. You can see that whether it is entering the game or switching maps, the reading of the progress bar It’s really fast, and you don’t have to wait for a long time. However, the waiting time for downloading the first update of the game is still a bit long. Next, we will see if the optimization experience laboratory can also optimize this aspect.

However, in terms of cooling performance, OnePlus Ace 2 does need further optimization. In the 30-minute “Genshin Impact” test, the phone reached a maximum temperature of 48.9°C on the front and 46.6°C on the back. Although there is no down-clocking during the whole process, it is still a bit hot to play “Genshin Impact” for a long time.

In terms of other mobile games, “Honor of King” has been able to open the mode of extreme picture quality and 120 frames, but there will also be a reminder of increased heat. “League of Legends: Wild Rift” also supports 120-frame games, but “Game For Peace” still only supports 90-frame mode with smooth image quality, and games with higher frame rates have to be achieved through game super-frame experience.

Battery Life and Charger

In terms of battery life, OnePlus Ace 2 is equipped with the same configuration combination of 100W fast charge + 5000mAh battery as OnePlus 11. Based on my experience of using OnePlus 11, this endurance configuration is quite comfortable to use.

In addition, OnePlus Ace 2 is also equipped with a world-first SUPERVOOC S full-link power management chip. Simply put, this chip integrates the functions of “fast charging MCU chip”, “charge pump chip” and “boost-boost charging chip” required by the traditional dual-cell solution.

Imaging Performance

The OnePlus Ace 2 is equipped with the Sony IMX890 main camera (50MP) of the OnePlus 11. Although it lacks the blessing of Hasselblad, OnePlus Ace 2 can still directly learn from the sensor adjustment experience accumulated in OnePlus 11 and Hasselblad. At the same time, the main camera is also equipped with OIS optical image stabilization.

With the support of outsole sensors and high pixels, the imaging performance of the main camera on OnePlus Ace 2 in natural light environments is still worthy of recognition. The overall color of the picture is relatively accurate, and the details are also very rich. Basically, you can share to Instagram without post-processing.

In the night scene environment, the performance of the main camera is still good. Although there are some overexposure issues, but fortunately, the clarity is high, the noise is well controlled, and the color reproduction is relatively accurate. Therefore, try to avoid a large area of light environment when shooting night scenes, and you will still have a good straight-out experience.

The ultra-wide-angle camera is 8MP, and the color performance of the imaging proofs of the ultra-wide-angle lens is a bit dull. Personally, I suggest that if the shooting environment can be taken backwards, it is better to step back and use the main camera to shoot as much as possible. The third rear camera is a 2MP macro camera.

In addition, although the OnePlus Ace 2 is not equipped with a telephoto lens, we can also get a good picture by cropping the proofs of the main camera by virtue of the high pixel of the main camera.

Overall, the performance of OnePlus Ace 2 in the imaging part is satisfactory. Especially in the face of the same type of competitors in the same price range, OnePlus Ace 2 is definitely the only one. In addition, OnePlus Ace 2 also supports infrared remote control function.
