JOWAY H203 review: No in-ear design, another choice for listening to music while exercising

JOWAY H203 is positioned for sport and comfort. Not only does it look stylish, it also has a large 14.2mm dynamic driver unit. There are iterative upgrades in wearing and acoustics.

    JOWAY H203 specs and features:
    • 14.2mm large dynamic driver
    • 9 hours playback of per charge
    • Charging case can charge earbuds fully 3 times
    • IPX4 waterproof rating (rain and sweat resistant)
    • ENC call noise canceling

    Appearance Design and Comfort

The size of the charging case is quite satisfactory for open-ear headphones. There are four battery indicator lights on the front side of the charging case. The charging interface is set on the right side.

JOWAY H203 is an earhook integrated design, the sound cavity and earhook are visually integrated. The outside of the headphone is designed with an orange glossy surface, and the inside is made of a dark blue matte material. In addition, there are status indicator light and a pickup microphone on the outside of the cavity.

The overall design is very similar to Oladance OWS Pro. It is worth mentioning that, unlike many OWS headphones, the earhook of the JOWAY H203 is made of the harder material.

Thanks to the open-ear design, the headphones do not enter the ear canal – that is, the ear canal remains open while listening to music. The arc of the earhook fits the ear better, and it can be hung on the ear firmly after wearing it. It will not be thrown off during strenuous exercise such as running and cycling.

However, due to the relatively stiff material used for the integrated earhook, the earhook is less bendable – it takes some skill and time to get used to wearing it.

    Connectivity, Control and Battery Life

JOWAY H203 adopts Bluetooth 5.3 connection technology, which needs to be paired with the mobile phone before use. The pairing process of headphones is not complicated, similar to most TWS earbuds. Take the headphone out of the charging case to enter the pairing state. At this time, select “QW H203” from the bluetooth list of the mobile phone to complete the connection.

The touch area of JOWAY H203 is located outside the cavity and has been marked with an icon. The touch area can recognize single-click, double-click, triple-click and long-press operations. The following is the touch control scheme of the headphones:

    • Single-tap L/R earbud: volume-/volume+
    • Double-tap L/R earbud for play/pause music
    • Long press L/R earbud 2s for previous/next track
    • Long press L or R earbud for answer/hang up call
    • Long press L or R earbud 2s for reject call
    • Triple-tap L or R earbud: activate voice assistant

The battery capacity of the charging case is 500mAh, and the headphone is 110mAh. The single battery life is up to 9 hours, and the total battery life is up to 36 hours.

    Sound Quality and Leakage

JOWAY H203 review: No in-ear design, another choice for listening to music while exercising

Thanks to the 14.2mm large dynamic driver, JOWAY H203 still brings strong volume performance and a certain amount of bass quantity even though the sound cavity is far from the eardrum.

For example, listening to hip-hop music while exercising can also bring a certain sense of movement. The transparency of the mid-high-frequency is a bit cloudy, but considering that this is a common “weakness” brought about by the structure of the open-ear headphones, it is also within the acceptable range.

JOWAY H203’s sound leakage control performed well. I tested in a quiet scene and found that the sound leakage can be detected within half a meter when the volume is above 80%, which has little effect on others.

    Conclusion

The large-sized dynamic driver of JOWAY H203 brings a good hearing, which can meet the listening needs in sports and commuting. In addition, the battery life of 9+27 hours also makes it possible to avoid battery life anxiety in daily use.

Overall, this is an OWS headphones that is especially suitable for use in daily sports scenes.
