Sennheiser HD 620S review: The first closed-back headphones of HD 600 series

In the first half of this year, Sennheiser released the first closed-back headphone of HD 600 series – Sennheiser HD 620S. Its launch can be said to have further enriched this classic series. In addition to the HD 820, this headphone is the highest-end closed-back headphone in Sennheiser’s consumer products.

Design: Continuing the classic structure of the HD 500 series

The appearance of the Sennheiser HD 620S continues the classic structure of the HD 500 series, adopting a professional and low-key all-black color scheme, and the headbeam is reinforced with metal to improve durability. Despite this, the headphone weighs only 326g, making it comfortable to wear and you won’t feel noticeable fatigue even after long time use.

The HD 620S supports balanced drive and uses a 2.5mm plug with a locking structure. The default cable comes with a 1.8-meter-long, single-ended 3.5mm + 6.35mm adapter. If you need a balanced cable, you have to buy it separately. The official announcement is that a 4.4mm balanced cable will be launched in the future.

Acoustic Design of Sennheiser HD 620S

In order to create a larger and more natural soundstage, Sennheiser HD 620S refers to the tilted installation of the units of HD 800S and HD 820, so that the sound waves propagate closer to the physiological structure of the ear and can reach the ear canal directly, reducing the reflection of sound waves in the earcups. Secondly, sound-absorbing cotton is installed on the back of the earcups to absorb excess sound waves and avoid distortion caused by reflection.

Furthermore, to reduce the sound reflection in the front cavity, the dust cover has a completely sound-transparent design, ensuring that sound waves can pass directly without being reflected. The inside of the earcups uses sound-absorbing cotton with fine holes to further avoid reflection distortion.

Sennheiser HD 620S has an impedance of 150Ω, which is well suited to various desktop headphone amplifiers. At the same time, the sensitivity is optimized, making it easier to drive and used in more scenarios. The unit design of HD 620S adopts a weight-reducing design and a structure that reduces resistance, making it more sensitive.

The sensitivity parameter of HD 620S is 110dB/1V RMS. In actual use, it is obviously stress-free to use it with Sennheiser HDV 820 and SPL Phonitor XE, and even Astell&Kern HC1 can drive it. However, compared with low-impedance headphones, HD 620S still needs higher volume output at the front end to get enough loudness.

Sounding: Outstanding low-frequency, delicate and rich mid-frequency

Officially, HD 620S and HD 600 have similar frequency response curves, and have focused on optimizing low-frequency performance below 100Hz. The first impression of HD 620S is that the low-frequency is its most prominent part. The mid-frequency vocals have rich details, and the vertical soundstage has a good depth, which can well present the sense of scale and space, and has some sound characteristics of open-back headphones.

“Orchestra: Weight of the World”: HD 620S can well present the sense of scale and vastness with its outstanding vertical soundstage, and the positioning of different instruments is clear enough. The headphone also has good transient performance, and with the advantage of low-frequency, they can show a full sense of grandeur. In terms of vocals, HD 620S focuses on showing details, and some people may feel that it is not full enough and a bit cold – you can try to match it with a warmer front end, which will have better vocal emotional expression.

“Beautiful World (Da Capo Version)”: HD 620S is very good at presenting different instruments, and each instrument has a precise positioning and presentation; making the entire listening experience very three-dimensional and with enough sense of space. The vocals are very delicate and have rich details, while also being able to show a wide range of sound.

    Conclusion & Specs

The HD 620S still maintains Sennheiser’s pursuit of sound quality and acoustic design. I think the launch of Sennheiser HD 620S is not to replace the existing models of HD 600 series, but to provide users with more choices by introducing a closed-back structure. HD 620S is not only suitable for use in quiet environments, but also provides excellent sound insulation in noisy scenes, expanding the flexibility of usage scenarios.
