    The Sony PlayStation 5 home electronic game console was officially launched in November 2020, which has seen a significant improvement in hardware. In the follow-up, Sony has successively launched a number of accessory products, including the PULSE 3D wireless headset set to provide users with a new generation of PS5 game sound effects.

    The Sony PlayStation PULSE 3D wireless headset is completely different from Sony’s head-mounted headset in appearance. The overall design style is very integrated with the PS5, and it also uses black and white colors. The headphone beam has a unique curve, and the inner side is equipped with a suspension elastic cushion to improve wearing comfort. The headset supports two ways of using a wireless adapter and a 3.5mm audio cable, and supports 12 hours of battery life.

    The PS5 host has made targeted optimizations for Sony PULSE 3D wireless headset, so that it can present the 3D sound effects achieved by the PS5 host, and provide players with an immersive game audio experience. Sony PULSE 3D is also equipped with dual noise reduction microphones to ensure clear communication with teammates during the game. Convenient control functions support microphone mute, volume, sound effect adjustment, and test whether your voice is transmitted to teammates’ microphone monitoring, etc.

    |1. Sony PULSE 3D Wireless adapter teardown

    After reading the appearance, we learned in detail about the appearance design of this product, and also learned the general location of the internal structure. Next, we will enter the dismantling part.

    Remove the bottom cover of the adapter.

    The bottom cover adopts a snap-in structure and a black translucent design, which also serves as a light guide for the work indicator.

    The internal structure of the cavity, the motherboard card slot is fixed, and it can be easily taken out.

    Pull out the internal main board, reset hole and corresponding reset micro switch.

    |2. Sony PlayStation PULSE 3D headphones teardown

    Remove the clip-on earmuffs of the right earphone.

    The inner side of the right earmuff adapts to the inclined structure of the sound cavity. Engraved with R logo, easy to assemble and distinguish.

    A dust-proof net cloth is arranged on the cover of the sound cavity.

    The oblique angle of the sound hole of the earphone sound cavity is set, which is more in line with the structure of the human auricle, so that the sound can be more effectively received by the ear.

    Tear off the product information label, below is the hidden fixing screw.

    Remove the screws, open the cavity, and there is a wire connection between the front and rear cavities.

    Disassemble the right earphone.

    There are multiple tuning holes around the back of the earphone speaker unit, and damping paper is pasted.

    After actual measurement, the speaker unit size is about 40mm.

    In the back cavity of the right ear is a battery power supply and an adapter board for easy assembly of the headset.

    The thermistor is fixed on the battery to detect the battery temperature.

    AKM AK4961 audio chip is a four-channel 24-bit ADC, stereo advanced 32-bit high-quality audio DAC and stereo 24-bit DAC, built-in microphone amplifier, mono receiver amplifier, headphone amplifier, line output and high-function audio/voice DSP.

    AK4961 uses AKM’s DSP core to support various voice processing, such as voice wake-up, dual microphone Tx noise suppression, Rx noise suppression, echo cancellation and hands-free functions. AK4961 has five audio I/F and SLIMbus I/F, can communicate with application processor, up to two baseband processors, bluetooth module and digital input class D amplifier at the same time, and mix asynchronous signal with built-in SRC.

    NXP LPC804 is a low-cost 32-bit MCU based on Arm Cortex-m0+, with an operating frequency of up to 15 MHZ. Supports up to 32 KB of flash memory and up to 4 KB of SRAM.

    |3. Summary

    Sony PlayStation PULSE 3D head-mounted wireless headset is a product designed specifically for PS5 game consoles, and is very integrated with game consoles in terms of appearance design. The overall weight of the headset is relatively light, and it is more comfortable to wear with soft earmuffs and the newly designed hanging rubber head cushion. The wired and wireless connection methods are used to adapt to the requirements of different games, and the function keys are also very rich, which is very convenient to use.

    The Sony PULSE 3D headset wireless receiver uses a USB-A interface. The internal motherboard uses the Skyworks AV6351 wireless audio transmitter IC and a memory, as well as a reset button to restore the factory settings when it is unable to connect.

The signal is processed by the AKM AK4961 audio chip, which integrates 24-bit ADC, 32-bit DAC, built-in multiple amplifiers and DSPs, and uses AKM’s DSP core to support various voice processing. And NXP LPC804 MCU, LPSemi LP5305 overvoltage and overcurrent protection IC, etc.
