Moondrop Starfield 2 review: Good looking and good sounding

In terms of sound style, there are differences between Moondrop Starfield 1 and Starfield 2. But from the perspective of “upgrade”, Moondrop Starfield 2 is definitely an upgrade in terms of resolution, frame, and density.

Appearance Design, Comfort and Accessories

Moondrop Starfield 2 uses the zinc alloy earphone cavity, and the surface is painted with dark blue + purple color-changing paint, which can show different colors under different lighting. It is worth mentioning that their panels are not completely flat, but slightly curved. The left and right panels are different, with the left earphone showing a starry sky and the right earphone depicting the brand and model.

The metal cavity shell is triangular in shape and has a certain sense of weight. But the wearing comfort and stability are still good, and there is no feeling of oppression. You won’t feel too tired after wearing it for a long time. Moondrop Starfield 2 earphones use a 0.78 dual-pin replaceable cable socket to facilitate subsequent replacement of balanced cables or bluetooth neckband cables.

The earphones use a brass sound tube – although it is not removable, we can remove the acoustic nozzle. Because earwax will always form after being used for a long time, it will be more thorough to clean it if you remove it.

There is a rectangular groove next to the sound conduit, which is the dispersed diversion slot of the pressure relief hole (to prevent adverse effects on the sound due to the obstruction of the concha cavity). After installing the sealing plug (officially called the bass enhancement plug), you can improve the low-frequency extension and enhance the atmosphere. After looking carefully, there are some completely sealed plugs, and some with small holes – the listening experience will be slightly different due to the effect of enhancing the bass, but you can still hear the difference if you listen carefully. I personally recommend using fully enclosed plugs for better bass enhancement.

The storage bag is made of dark blue leather, which is more low-key than the earphones. The storage bag feels good and the texture is soft. The interior space is compact, just enough to accommodate a pair of earphones. The flat shape can also be easily stuffed into a trouser pocket when carrying it out. There are also three pairs of silicone eartips and headphone cables. In addition, there are individually packaged “sealing plugs”, so don’t throw them away.

Moondrop Starfield 2 is equipped with a customized 3.5mm silver-plated single-ended cable, which can effectively reduce signal transmission interference. The headphone cable is thicker and slightly stiffer, and uses the same color as the earphone cavity.

Configuration, Parameters and Sound Quality

Moondrop Starfield 2 is equipped with a 10mm lithium-magnesium alloy dome composite diaphragm dynamic driver. Their damping coefficients are also very good, which can greatly increase the band-wide, play back more details, effectively suppress excess resonance, and improve the naturalness of treble. The frequency response range is between 12Hz-24KHz, the sensitivity is 122dB, and the impedance is 15Ω.

Also, Moondrop Starfield 2 isn’t too picky when it comes to front-end options and can even be driven directly. However, if you want to get more performance, it is best to pair it with a decoding headphone amplifier or HiFi music player.

After installing the sealing plug, the bass performance is even better. The low-frequency quantity is sufficient and rich in texture, the extended depth is well controlled, and the clarity and transient performance are both good. Loose and clean, with full overtones, strong cohesion, and a strong sense of atmosphere and presence.

The mid-frequency is loose and natural, rich in layering, and the density is well controlled. The imaging is clear, the sound is pure, and the sound coloration is small. Starfield 2 does not deliberately pursue sensory stimulation, but restores the singer’s voice as much as possible. The vocal position is centered and there is no obvious cold or warm bias. The dentals are well controlled, the details are restored accurately, and the layering is also handled well. The separation between instruments is also very good, and there is no feeling of clutter. Especially when listening to female voices, they are fresh and sweet with a hint of agility.

High-frequency is transparent and bright, not harsh. The amount of information is also rich enough, and the resolution and scalability are also excellent. Slight overtones and fast transient response. Although the soundstage is not very large, it is very regular.

Overall, the tri-frequency distribution of Moondrop Starfield 2 is relatively balanced. It’s suitable for listening to vocal pop music or classical string music.

Conclusion

In terms of sound style, there are differences between Moondrop Starfield 1 and Starfield 2. But from the perspective of “upgrade”, Moondrop Starfield 2 is definitely an upgrade in terms of resolution, frame, and density. If you want a headset that is easy to drive, suitable for mainly instrumental music, and can also take into account popular vocals, then Moondrop Starfield 2 is worth to trying.
