Appearance Design, Comfort and Battery Life
Moondrop Edge is a relatively compact over-ear design, with the cavity fitting the shape of the ear. The headphone is made of plastic (except for the telescopic bracket and rotating shaft), and the surface is frosted and painted to reduce the possibility of fingerprints.
The headbeam is covered with a layer of fabric, which is more resistant to dirt, and the sponge inside is also thick. Thanks to the overall lightweight, the headbeam is designed with fabric material, which is also very comfortable to wear, and it does not pinch your head even if you wear it for a long time. The stretched length of the headbeam is about 2.5cm. The telescopic bracket and the shaft are made of metal, which supports inward folding and parallel folding.
The earcups are designed with buckles and are filled with memory foam – thick and soft enough, with a certain slow rebound. They can wrap the ears well when worn, and the physical sound insulation effect is good. Plus, the weight of the headphone is about 245g, and the earcups are large enough, making them very comfortable to wear.
The single playtime is up to 48 hours, and it can be fully charged in about 1.5 hours. Turning on ANC and LDAC will further reduce the battery life. It also supports fast charging function, charging for 5 minutes to listen to music for 4 hours.
Connectivity, App Support and Controls
The headphone use the Bluetooth 5.4 protocol and support SBC, AAC and LDAC codec. Thanks to the large size onboard antenna, the connection stability of Moondrop Edge is much better than I expected, even in complex environments such as subways and airports. In an environment without obstacles, the connection will be intermittent when the distance from the phone is more than 50 meters.
Also, Moondrop Edge supports dual device connection and can connect mobile phone and computer at the same time. Unfortunately, wired connection mode is not supported.
Moondrop Edge supports the Moondrop Link App for Android and iOS. The app provides noise cancelling settings, ANC button settings, gain settings, preset EQ options (Balance/Extra Bass/Country Style/Old Studio Style/Violin Solo), LDAC switch, firmware updates, and more.
The headphone control relies on the physical buttons on the right headphone, from top to bottom, they are ANC/TP button, volume-, multi-function button, volume+. The four buttons have the same feel, the key travel is short but the pressing feedback is clear. The multi-function button and volume button have a blind operation design on the surface. The loudness and clarity of the voice prompts are good.
Noise Cancelling Performance and Calls
Moondrop Edge has a dedicated physical noise cancelling button, which can be switched between transparent, normal (ANC OFF), and noise cancelling with one tap. It supports Hybrid ANC and has two high-sensitivity microphones on each side. The Edge’s passive sound isolation ability is average, and the isolation of low-frequency noise is not very good.
After turning on ANC mode, you can’t hear the surrounding sound at all when playing music at normal volume (you can hear it when watching the video). In actual use, every time I turn on the headphone, it is in normal mode and I need to manually switch to noise cancelling mode. In this process, I can clearly feel the reduction of surrounding ambient sound by ANC mode.
In terms of anti-wind noise, although Edge does not has a wind noise mode, its wind noise suppression capability is still good – compared to most ANC headphones at the same price, it has lower wind noise impact.
After the transparent mode is turned on, the naturalness of the ambient sound is still good, and the restoration of the mid-high frequency ambient sound will not make you feel dull. However, the low-frequency will be slightly suppressed, and the mid-high frequency will have a slight gain, which is helpful for the usability of voice.
When it comes to the calls, Moondrop Edge supports dual-microphone beamforming ENC (two on each side). When talking on the phone, it has good sound reception and the clarity is OK, but the loudness is slightly lacking. In an environment with complex ambient noise, there will be some situations that affect the clarity of the call. In scenes with more low-frequency noise (subway/airplane), the speech is not easy to hear clearly.
Acoustic Configuration and Sound Quality (LDAC+Balance)
Moondrop Edge uses a 40mm high-resolution beryllium-plated dome and flexible surround composite diaphragm low-distortion dynamic driver, supporting SBC, AAC and LDAC codec (LDAC is off by default and needs to be turned on via the app). Plus, the acoustic environment of the dynamic driver is isolated from the circuit board through an independent acoustic cavity, thus ensuring full play of the acoustic performance.
The low-frequency quantity is moderate, fluffy and full, with accurate extension and good elasticity. The imaging is clear, the cohesion is strong, the dynamic control is precise, and the atmosphere is quite strong. Plus, the layering and cohesion are excellent, the speed is slightly faster, and listening to metal percussion has a distinct sense of rhythm and excellent transparency.
The mid-frequency vocals are loose and stretched, with moderate distance and thickness. The tone is pure, layered, smooth, with good sibilance control and delicate detail restoration. The sound dyeing is restrained, the mouth shape is not big, the outline is clear, and it has good tolerance for both male and female voices.
The high-frequency transparency and brightness are very good, without burrs. The transient response is fast and has a certain amount of information. The dynamic performance is moderate, and the resolution and ductility are good. The separation between vocals and instruments is good.
The sound style of Moondrop Edge is quite soft and soothing, almost without any aggression, and it is a tuning style that makes people easily immersed in it. The tri-frequency connection is natural and balanced. The sound is delicate and stretched, not thin and dull. Whether it is pop music, folk music, ACG and other genres, it can be well presented.
Conclusion
Overall, Moondrop Edge does not compromise on sound quality while reducing costs. The product strength and completion are very high, and there are no bugs that affect the experience in daily use.
