In 2021, Edifier ushered in its 25th anniversary. At the “Voice of the Times, Listen to the Future” new product launch conference held on May 27th, the 25th anniversary keynote speech gave us an understanding of the development history of the Edifier brand, as well as the brand values and brand philosophy of the Edifier. At the same time, its new generation of TWS earbuds——Edifier NeoBuds Pro true wireless ANC balanced armature+hybrid driver earbuds are also officially released.

Edifier NeoBuds Pro true wireless ANC earbuds continues Edifier’s unique design elements in appearance design, and newly added the indicator design of the “sports car taillight” to make it more recognizable. In terms of functional configuration, the noise reduction effect has been further improved, providing the deepest flagship level noise reduction depth of -42dB. Support environmental sound monitoring mode, support three-mic call noise reduction.

The Edifier NeoBuds Pro has also made all-round improvements in sound quality. It adopts the knowles armature+ composite diaphragm dynamic driver sound unit, and achieves three-band balanced high-quality audio through frequency division technology; it also supports LHDC high-definition audio codec, It is also the world’s first TWS headset with Hi-Res certification. Let us experience this product in detail below.

1. Appearance Design

Edifier NeoBuds Pro ANC earbuds continues the shape of the previous generation NB2 series in the overall appearance curve design, but the overall texture has been further improved, and a new cool LED light strip has been added to make it more futuristic technology.

The charging case is treated with a silicone-like process, which makes it softer and more skin-friendly. The top metal-like bright silver cover and the Edifier logo enhance the sense of hierarchy, texture and recognition of the product.

The front opening is designed with grooves for easy opening. Inside is an indicator light similar to a “sports car tail light”. When the charging case cover is opened, the bar lights are turned on from the center to both sides, and when the charging case is closed, the lights are turned off from both sides inward. When charging, it is a regular turn on and off cycle.

The EDIFIER brand LOGO is engraved on the back shaft of the charging case, and the Type-C charging port below is set in the groove to reduce the risk of damage.

Edifier NeoBuds Pro true wireless ANC earbuds overall appearance display. In the charging case, the earphone cockpit is designed with L/R logos on both sides of the earphone handle, which is convenient for users to quickly distinguish, pick and place. A function button is set in the middle position for bluetooth pairing connection.

Edifier NeoBuds Pro earphones continue the design style of Edifier NB series, using two different craftsmanship. The metal texture on the back of the earphone handle is matched with the brand logo, which is very recognizable. And the volume is more compact and optimized in many details.

The two ends of the back plate of the earphone handle have been arced. Although it is still full of three-dimensionality, it is no longer so sharp compared to the previous generation. The openings of the feed-forward noise reduction microphone are treated with a beveled surface, and the internal metal mesh is covered, which has a stronger sense of layering and texture.

There are charging metal contacts and L/R logo on the inside of the earphone handle. A small pressure relief hole is provided on the top of the earphone to maintain air circulation in the cavity, balance the pressure inside and outside the earphone, and improve wearing comfort.

The opening of the call microphone at the bottom is also chamfered, and the inside is covered by a fine dust-proof net to prevent dust from entering.

A circular tuning hole is also provided at the bottom of the earphone output tube. The earphone has a circular sound mouth, covered by a fine dust-proof net to prevent foreign objects from entering the sound cavity. There is also a back-feed noise reduction microphone inside, which is used to collect the internal noise of the ear canal and improve the noise reduction effect.

After actual measurement, the overall weight of the Edifier NeoBuds Pro true wireless ANC earphones is about 57.6g. The weight of a single earbud is about 5.5g, which is a medium level, but the overall wearing is more comfortable, without obvious weight-bearing feeling.

Edifier NeoBuds Pro true wireless ANC earbuds continues the design language of the NB series in appearance and inherits the unique shape of the NB2 series. However, the charging case adopts a silicone-like tactile process. The silver metal cover further enhances the product texture. The addition of the marquee makes it more technological. The volume of the earphone is more compact, and the handle of the earphone is curved, which makes the look and feel relatively softer. . The opening has a beveled surface design, which enhances the sense of hierarchy of the headset.

2. Function Experience

Interactive experience

In terms of bluetooth connection, because it is a third-party audio brand product, it fails to support the quick pop-up connection function. You need to long press the function button in the charging case and search for “EDIFIER NeoBuds Pro” in the bluetooth interface of the mobile phone for pairing connection. After the pairing is successful, you can use it to connect after opening the cover. It is the current mainstream TWS headset connection solution and is more convenient to use.

Through the “EDIFIER Connect” mobile phone APP, you can view the real-time percentage remaining power of charging cases and earphones, which is convenient for users to charge the earphones in time. You can also set the noise reduction mode, game mode, music and sound effects, and shortcut function buttons in the APP.

In terms of control, Edifier NeoBuds Pro supports double-click and triple-click modes, distinguishing between left and right earphones, and the control options can be individually set through the APP. The control options are relatively rich, which can support volume +/-, up/down song switching, wake up voice assistant, etc., but since there are relatively few control modes, users need to choose between them.

Music effect

Sound quality is the main selling point of Edifier NeoBuds Pro this time. It has been improved in terms of sound unit configuration, audio codec and software assistance, making it the world’s first TWS headset product that has obtained Hi-Res high-fidelity audio certification.

In terms of configuration, the Edifier NeoBuds Pro uses a hybrid sound unit with a composite diaphragm dynamic+knowles armature combination. The balanced armature has higher resolution and sensitivity, which can bring high-quality high-frequency sound quality; while the dynamic driver has more Natural and full low frequency effect.

Through frequency division technology, the advantages of the two units are complemented, and the audio of different frequency bands are processed separately, which gives full play to the advantages of the two sound generating units. And in the overall sense of hearing, the connection between frequency bands is also smoother, and there is no obvious sense of fragmentation caused by different sound styles.

In the bluetooth audio codec part, Edifier NeoBuds Pro supports two high-definition audio codecs, LHDC and LDAC. The former is currently available and has three options of 400Kbps bitstream, 500Kbps bitstream, and 900Kbps bitstream. The higher the bit rate, the higher the sound quality. Relatively better, but more susceptible to interference from the hardware limitations of connected devices and the environment, and users can freely adjust according to their individual needs. LDAC is currently unavailable and needs to wait for subsequent firmware upgrades.

Edifier NeoBuds Pro also supports three modes of pure, dynamic and audiophile in musical performance. The tri-frequency effect of the pure mode is relatively more balanced; the dynamic mode is mainly to enhance the bass effect of the music, the low frequency extension is deeper, more surging, and more passionate.

Audiophile mode is more suitable for users who have personal needs for sound quality. You can customize the gain, bandwidth, and frequency to achieve the desired music effect.

Noise reduction effect

Edifier NeoBuds Pro has also been upgraded in terms of active noise reduction. Through the hybrid active noise reduction technology, the maximum noise reduction depth has been increased to 42dB. In terms of experience, the width of noise reduction has also been significantly improved, and the mid-to-high frequency range of human voices and keyboard percussions in the office have been reduced.

Edifier NeoBuds Pro also supports the comfort mode. After it is turned on, it can automatically adjust the noise reduction effect according to the noise of the environment, to achieve the most comfortable noise reduction experience, and reduce the ear pressure of turning on noise reduction in a low-noise environment.

The ambient sound monitoring mode is mainly aimed at some short-term communication, or the function of obtaining site and environmental information during the commuting process. You can easily hear the surrounding information without taking off the headphones. The level of ambient sound can also be adjusted in the APP to meet the needs of use in different scenarios.

The only shortcoming during use is that although the Edifier NeoBuds Pro supports four noise reduction modes, it can only switch between two modes through earphone control. The transparent mode is a fixed option, and you can choose one.

In terms of call noise reduction, Edifier NeoBuds Pro effectively reduces the noise in the surrounding environment by mixing two noise reduction microphones and a dedicated call microphone, and the three microphones cooperate with the call noise reduction algorithm, wind noise detection and AI smart pickup algorithm. It affects and enhances the subject’s voice to achieve high-definition voice call effects, and clear calls can be made even in windy weather.

Delayed performance

Due to the limitation of innate transmission methods, delay is an inevitable problem of TWS earbuds. However, with the continuous progress of bluetooth technology and the support of the brand’s software algorithms, the delay has been effectively reduced.

Edifier NeoBuds Pro true wireless ANC earbuds support game mode in terms of game performance, and the game delay can be as low as 80ms after being turned on. In terms of experience, it can be used well for the current mainstream games such as “Game For Peace” and “Honor of King”. The audio and picture are synchronized, the sound follows the hand, and the game can be played smoothly.

Charging & Battery life

Battery life is a very important purchase factor in TWS earbuds. Edifier NeoBuds Pro uses the current mainstream Type-C charging interface, supports fast charging, and can be used for 1 hour after 10 minutes of charging.

Use a portable power tester to perform a wired charging test on the Edifier NeoBuds Pro. The input power reaches more than 3W, and the charging case can be fully charged in about 1 hour. The charging case for the headset is also about 1 hour.

In the fully charged state, the earbuds only uses bluetooth mode for a single battery life up to 6 hours, and the charging case can charge the headset three additional times, and the overall battery life up to 24 hours.

3. Summary

Edifier NeoBuds Pro true wireless hybrid noise-cancelling headphones have their own characteristics in appearance design, and the TWS headphones market that is getting closer and closer to the same can make people shine. The charging case uses a symmetrical design, a silicone-like tactile body, and a silver LOGO cover. The headset continues the design of the previous generation, but the volume is smaller, the look and feel is softer, and the overall texture is better.

In terms of functional experience, the Edifier NeoBuds Pro has improved the active noise reduction function, which can eliminate low-frequency environmental noise more cleanly, and the noise reduction width has also been improved. The newly added comfortable noise reduction mode can intelligently adjust the noise reduction effect according to the ambient noise, making it more comfortable to wear; the ambient sound mode and three-microphone noise reduction, which enhance the use requirements in different scenarios.

Sound quality is the focus of this Edifier NeoBuds Pro upgrade, becoming the world’s first TWS headset product with Hi-Res certification for sound quality. Using a balanced armature+dynamic driver sound unit, with frequency division technology, accurately exert the advantages of each unit, provide balanced three-band high-quality performance; LHDC high-definition audio codec, with up to 900Kbps stream, can restore richer sound details .

In terms of latency, the Edifier NeoBuds Pro supports game mode, and the latency can be as low as 80ms after being turned on, enabling a smooth gaming experience. Other performance aspects such as interaction and battery life can also satisfy daily use, but there are also some minor shortcomings. The touch mode has relatively few functions and is not equipped with a wireless charging function, which reduces the user experience to a certain extent.
