“Immersive flight experience” sounds like a relatively unfamiliar term. But when it comes to immersive experience, everyone will immediately think of AR, VR and other products that require head-mounted devices with somatosensory control. So if you add flying, it becomes the DJI Avata drone released by DJI recently. Compared with the previous DJI FPV and many racing drones, the DJI Avata is more like a device that allows ordinary users to quickly experience the fun of immersive flying.

    Unboxing & Appearance Design

Because the compatibility of DJI Avata is good, it also supports the use of DJI FPV Goggles V2, motion controller and DJI FPV remote control. Therefore, different combinations are also provided for users to choose from on the retail version. If you already have the above DJI products, you can just buy DJI Avata.

If you are a new user, you can choose a set with DJI Goggles 2 and motion controller, or you can choose a set with DJI FPV Goggles V2.

    01/ DJI Avata

The packaging of the DJI Avata is quite “environmental friendly” compared to previous DJI drones. In addition to the DJI Avata, there are only two spare propellers, hex wrench, Type-C cable, portable charging base and product manual.

Compared with the DJI FPV previously released by DJI, this time the DJI Avata has been greatly reduced in size. And there is an obvious feature in the appearance, that is, the propeller guard has become a non-removable part of the fuselage, so the safety of flight has also been further improved.

The body size of the DJI Avata is 180x180x80mm. How small is the specific size? We take the size of the palm of an adult male as a comparison, and we can get a rough idea.

The overall structure of DJI Avata uses the battery, flight control and camera module placed above the propeller. From the side, you can see that most of the space of the fuselage is mainly reserved for the battery.

The weight of the DJI Avata has also been greatly reduced. The actual measurement of the DJI Avata without the battery is only about 250g, which is close to the weight of an iPhone 13 Pro Max, which is very light. After installing the battery, the take-off weight is only about 410g, and the portability is greatly improved.

In terms of photography parameters, DJI Avata uses a 1/1.7″ CMOS sensor, which supports up to 48 million pixel photos and 4K 60P video recording. Compared with the previous DJI FPV’s 1/2.3″ CMOS sensor, the area is larger, and the picture quality is also better.

Since DJI Avata pursues an immersive flight experience from the first perspective, it is not equipped with the common 3-axis gimbal of DJI aerial photography drones, but a single-axis (pitch) gimbal. It is equipped with shock-absorbing rubber and DJI’s super stabilization algorithm, so as to achieve a stable picture from the first perspective.

In terms of drone sensors, the DJI Avata is equipped with dual ToF and vision sensors. The effective measurement height of ToF is 10 meters, and the visual hovering range is 0.5 to 20 meters. Help users to perform hovering flight control safely and stably.

It is a little regrettable that DJI Avata is not equipped with forward and side obstacle avoidance sensors, perhaps to control the size of the body, which is understandable. However, for many entry-level users of small drones, more obstacle avoidance sensors can definitely bring a safer flight experience.

DJI Avata uses a five-piece propeller, and with a fixed propeller guard, it can greatly improve the safety of drone flight.

In addition, the design of the propeller guard also took a lot of thought. Friends who are familiar with racing drones must know that because the flying actions of drones are completely different from those of aerial photography drones, they also consume more energy. The traditional racing drone has a battery life of about 10 minutes. Therefore, in order to improve the flight time of DJI Avata, the propeller guard is designed as a duct structure to improve the power efficiency as much as possible, so as to achieve 20 minutes of flight and 18 minutes of hovering endurance.

In terms of battery, DJI Avata uses an intelligent flight battery of 2420mAh.

    02/ Motion Controller & DJI Goggles 2

DJI Goggles 2 set includes DJI motion controller, DJI Goggles 2, goggles battery, goggles power cable, two lenses, USB A-C adapter and operation manual.

The motion controller is a somatosensory control device released by DJI at the same time as the release of DJI FPV. Users can operate DJI FPV and DJI Avata in a somatosensory way. Compared with the traditional operation of racing drones, the use of the remote control requires a lot of practice, the motion controller is a good solution to the difficult problem of ordinary users.

This time we will focus on introducing the DJI Goggles 2 that DJI has finally updated. Because it’s been 5 years since the release of the first-generation DJI Goggles. Compared with the huge size of the previous generation of DJI Goggles, this time the DJI Goggles 2 looks very small.

A major feature of DJI Goggles 2 is that it uses a Micro-OLED LCD screen for display, with a resolution of 1080P, a refresh rate of 100Hz, and a brightness of 800 nits. It is also because of the use of Micro-OLED material that the size of DJI Goggles 2 can be greatly reduced, making it more comfortable to wear.

Another good news is that DJI Goggles 2 supports diopter adjustment, which is really good news for users who wear glasses.

Many VR glasses and head-mounted devices do not support diopter adjustment. Myopia users either wear glasses and then wear the head-mounted device, or they need to buy myopia lenses separately, which is very inconvenient. This time, DJI Goggles 2 has a knob under the eyes, which can be used for precise adjustment of pupil distance and diopter. Myopia users can finally use it without wearing myopia glasses.

DJI Goggles 2 also have improved interaction, adding a touch area to the right of the goggles. The setup and interaction of DJI Goggles 2 can be operated entirely with touch.

The other side of the goggles is the TF card slot and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It is worth mentioning that the DJI Goggles 2 has added a wireless screen projection function, that is, you can use the DJI Goggles 2 as a viewing device when you are not using a drone. Moreover, DJI Goggles 2 also has built-in dual speakers, which is quite comfortable to watch videos when not in use.

The battery is the same as the previous generation DJI Goggles, with a capacity of 1800mAh. A snap is also added to the Type-C interface on the power cable to prevent the goggles from being turned off due to the sudden pull-out of the cable.
