While there is direct competition on high-end wireless earphones like the Surface Headphones 2 and the Sony WH-1000XM4, Microsoft occasionally strikes some interesting collaborations with Sony. Recently, Microsoft researchers introduced how to integrate Soundscape technology into Sony LinkBuds true wireless earbuds.
It is reported that Soundscape is a product of Microsoft Research. It explores innovative audio technologies to help people develop a richer awareness of their surroundings so they can become more confident and able to move around.
Unlike step-by-step navigation apps, Soundscape uses novel 3D audio cues to enrich environmental awareness. This allows users to build mental maps and make personal routing choices that make them more comfortable in unfamiliar spaces.
It’s worth mentioning that Soundscape works in the background for everyone, meaning you can use it with apps like podcasts, audiobooks, email, and even location navigation.
Microsoft Research notes that Soundscape has profiles that are best suited for ambient sounds, but also supports setting up navigation beacons that use spatial audio to guide users, or to help familiarize themselves with Soundscape callouts.
Specifically, Soundscape uses synthesized binaural audio and 3D sound to create audio profiles.
Once paired, apps and services leverage area- and location-based environmental mapping via sensors on a smartphone or tablet, allowing users to follow environmental beacons for a hands-free and line-of-sight-free navigation experience.
